In addition, Matt Schmidt, CEO of Los Alamos Schools Federal Credit Union, has been appointed Chair of the Board. Albuquerque, NM — May 9, 2025 – The Credit Union Association of New Mexico (CUANM) continues to strengthen its support for credit unions with the addition of Julie Kappenman in Risk & Regulatory Affairs. In this role, Julie will lead regulatory advocacy efforts and provide compliance solutions to credit unions across the state. Julie brings with her more than 30 years of experience in the credit union and financial regulatory space. Her career began as an accounting intern at a credit union and expanded through roles at the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), Mountain West Credit Union Association, and the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Most recently, she served as an Anti-Money Laundering Investigator for Glacier Bancorp. Julie’s diverse background includes launching new credit unions, authoring supervisory committee resources, leading compliance programs across multiple states, and strengthening public-private partnerships on a national scale. She holds several industry certifications, including CUDE, BSACS, CAMS, and CUCE. “We are thrilled to welcome Julie to the Association,” said Melia Heimbuck, President and CEO of CUANM. “Her depth of experience and passion for supporting credit unions—especially in the areas of compliance and risk management—will be an invaluable asset as we continue to advocate for and strengthen our New Mexico credit unions.” In her new role, Julie will serve as a resource for credit unions navigating regulatory compliance, risk management, and examiner expectations. Credit union advocates from across New Mexico recently attended Representative Melanie Stansbury’s district-wide road show, making stops in Albuquerque, Roswell, and several smaller communities throughout the state. These visits provided valuable opportunities to highlight the impact of credit unions in New Mexico and advocate for the continued strength of our movement. During each stop, advocates shared local credit union success stories, emphasized the importance of member-driven financial services, and thanked Rep. Stansbury for her ongoing support. Earlier this month, Rep. Stansbury signed a letter—led by America’s Credit Unions—affirming her support for the credit union tax status. This tax status is essential to the credit union difference, helping us deliver more value to our members and reinvest in our communities. In addition to expressing appreciation for her support, advocates also took time to highlight the importance of maintaining an independent National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Independent regulators help ensure that credit unions remain safe, sound, and member-focused—and that they are not treated like for-profit institutions. As we attended events with Rep. Stansbury’s team and spoke to constituents across the district, one thing was clear: credit unions are making a difference in every corner of the state. We’re grateful to Rep.
